Nakshatra Padas Explained

A pada is one quarter of a nakshatra (one of the 27 lunar mansions of Jyotish). When someone tells you a graha sits in a particular pada, they are telling you something more precise than the nakshatra alone can say. There are 108 padas in the full zodiac, four for every nakshatra, and each one spans exactly 3 degrees and 20 minutes of arc.

That precision matters because a pada is not just a label of convenience. It is the same unit as a navamsa, and that identity between two systems is the reason padas carry as much weight as they do in a reading.

What a Pada Actually Is

A nakshatra spans 13 degrees and 20 minutes, which is 800 arc-minutes. Dividing that into four equal parts gives 200 arc-minutes, or 3 degrees and 20 minutes, per pada. Each nakshatra therefore contributes exactly four of these quarters to the zodiac, and the 27 nakshatras together account for all 108.

The padas are numbered first through fourth, moving in the direction of increasing longitude. A graha at the very start of a nakshatra is in its first pada. A graha near the end is in its fourth. Because the nakshatra and the pada together fix a graha's position more precisely than either one alone, practitioners read the pada alongside the nakshatra when interpreting a chart.

A common misconception is that padas are a purely symbolic subdivision with no structural role. They are not. Each pada corresponds to a specific degree span within a rashi (one of the twelve 30-degree divisions of the zodiac), and the relationship between that span and the rashi's navamsa sequence is exact, not approximate.

Padas and Navamsas Are the Same Division

A rashi spans 1800 arc-minutes. A nakshatra spans 800 arc-minutes. The greatest common divisor of 1800 and 800 is 200 arc-minutes, which is exactly one pada. This arithmetic has a direct consequence: any overlap between a nakshatra and a rashi is always a whole number of padas. A nakshatra never contributes three-quarters of a pada, or a third, or any non-whole fraction of itself to a rashi. The boundary between a nakshatra and a rashi always falls at a pada boundary.

This is not a coincidence of design. It is why the pada system and the navamsa system produce the same 108 divisions. The navamsa, explained fully at the D9 chart guide, divides each rashi into nine equal parts of 200 arc-minutes each. One navamsa is 200 arc-minutes. One pada is 200 arc-minutes. They are the same span of sky described from two different starting points: the nakshatra sequence and the rashi sequence.

The practical result is that a graha's pada position in the nakshatra sequence is identical to its navamsa position in the rashi sequence. Knowing which pada a graha occupies tells you which navamsa it occupies, and therefore which navamsa rashi it is placed in. This is the bridge between the lunar mansion system and the divisional chart system, and it runs in both directions.

Why Rashis Divide Evenly into Padas

Each rashi contains exactly nine navamsas, which means it contains exactly nine padas. Since the 27 nakshatras produce 108 padas in total, and the 12 rashis each contain 9 padas, the arithmetic closes perfectly: 12 times 9 is 108.

What changes from rashi to rashi is which navamsa rashi those nine padas are assigned to. The sequence of navamsa rashis within a rashi depends on whether the rashi is movable, fixed, or dual.

For a movable rashi, the nine navamsas begin from that rashi itself and proceed in order. Mesha (Aries) is movable, so its navamsas run from Mesha through Dhanu, covering all nine rashis starting from Mesha. Karka (Cancer) is also movable, so its navamsas begin from Karka itself and run through Meena.

For a fixed rashi, the nine navamsas begin from the ninth rashi counted from it. Vrishabha (Taurus) is fixed, and the ninth rashi from Vrishabha is Makara, so Vrishabha's navamsas run from Makara onward. Simha (Leo) is fixed, and the ninth rashi from Simha is Mesha, so Simha's navamsas begin from Mesha.

For a dual rashi, the nine navamsas begin from the fifth rashi counted from it. Mithuna (Gemini) is dual, and the fifth rashi from Mithuna is Tula, so Mithuna's navamsas run from Tula onward. Kanya (Virgo) is dual, and the fifth rashi from Kanya is Makara.

This is a relative rule applied rashi by rashi. It is not a rule that all movable rashis begin from Mesha. Mesha begins from Mesha because Mesha itself is the first rashi and its own ninth-from is itself in the movable calculation. Karka begins from Karka for the same structural reason. The pattern is consistent, but the starting navamsa rashi differs for every rashi in the zodiac.

Understanding divisional charts more broadly helps place this in context. The navamsa is one of several vargas, each built on a different subdivision of the rashi, and the pada's identity with the navamsa makes it the most fundamental of those subdivisions.

The Navamsa Lord of a Pada

Because each pada corresponds to a navamsa rashi, it also corresponds to the lord of that navamsa rashi. When a graha occupies a particular pada, the lord of that pada's navamsa rashi becomes a secondary influence on how the graha expresses itself.

A graha placed in the first pada of Ashwini, for instance, sits in the navamsa of Mesha, whose lord is Mangal. A graha in the second pada of Ashwini sits in the navamsa of Vrishabha, whose lord is Shukra. The nakshatra lord of Ashwini is Ketu throughout all four padas, but the navamsa lord changes with each step. The reading of a graha in Ashwini therefore depends partly on which of these four navamsa lords is active.

This layering is where pada analysis becomes genuinely useful in practice. The nakshatra sets the broad quality of a graha's placement. The pada refines it by introducing a second lord whose nature and chart position modify the result. A graha in a pada whose navamsa lord is dignified and well-placed will generally express the nakshatra's qualities more cleanly than a graha in a pada whose navamsa lord is under pressure.

Vargottama

Vargottama describes a graha that occupies the same rashi in both the D1 (rashi) chart and the D9 (navamsa) chart. That is the complete definition. A graha is vargottama when its navamsa rashi matches its rashi chart rashi, and not otherwise.

Because the navamsa sequence within each rashi begins from a rashi-specific starting point, the navamsa that maps back to the same rashi as the D1 falls at a different position within each rashi type. For a movable rashi, whose navamsa sequence begins from that rashi itself, the first navamsa maps back to that rashi. A graha in the first navamsa of a movable rashi is therefore vargottama. That first navamsa occupies the opening 3 degrees and 20 minutes of the rashi.

For a fixed rashi, whose navamsa sequence begins from the ninth rashi counted from it, the navamsa that maps back to the rashi itself falls fifth in the sequence. A graha in the fifth navamsa of a fixed rashi is vargottama. That fifth navamsa occupies the span from 13 degrees 20 minutes to 16 degrees 40 minutes within the rashi.

For a dual rashi, whose navamsa sequence begins from the fifth rashi counted from it, the navamsa that maps back to the rashi itself falls ninth, at the end. A graha in the ninth navamsa of a dual rashi is vargottama. That ninth navamsa occupies the final 3 degrees and 20 minutes of the rashi.

These are degree spans, not pada numbers. Stating vargottama as a pada number would require knowing which nakshatra happens to occupy that degree span in each rashi, and the answer differs for every rashi. The correct way to identify a vargottama graha is to check whether its navamsa rashi in the D9 matches its rashi in the D1, or equivalently, whether its degree position falls within the vargottama span for its rashi type.

Vargottama is generally read as a condition of stability and coherence. The graha's rashi-level and navamsa-level placements reinforce each other rather than pulling in different directions. Practitioners differ on how much additional strength this confers, and the tradition does not treat it as overriding other dignity factors such as exaltation or debilitation.

How Much a Pada Actually Changes

A reasonable question is whether moving from one pada to the next represents a meaningful shift or a minor technical adjustment. The answer depends on what is changing.

Within a single nakshatra, the nakshatra lord remains constant across all four padas. A graha in any pada of Rohini is under Chandra's nakshatra lordship throughout. What changes at each pada boundary is the navamsa rashi and its lord. If the navamsa lord shifts from a dignified, well-placed graha to one that is under pressure, the quality of expression can shift noticeably even though the nakshatra remains the same.

The more significant boundary is the one between two nakshatras. When a graha crosses from the fourth pada of one nakshatra into the first pada of the next, both the nakshatra lord and the navamsa rashi change simultaneously. These transitions, particularly when they also cross a rashi boundary, are points where practitioners look carefully at a chart.

Not every pada boundary crosses a rashi boundary. A rashi contains nine padas, and the nakshatras within it are arranged so that some nakshatras fall entirely within one rashi while others straddle two. When a nakshatra straddles a rashi boundary, its padas that fall in the first rashi carry navamsa assignments from that rashi's sequence, and its padas in the second rashi carry assignments from the second rashi's sequence. The nakshatra lord is continuous; the navamsa context is not.

For a graha moving by gochara (transit), these boundaries can mark timing shifts. For a natal graha, the pada is a fixed quality of the birth chart that practitioners return to when the nakshatra reading alone leaves something unexplained. Reading the lagna and the natal chart as a whole provides the frame within which pada analysis makes sense. A pada refines; it does not replace the broader reading of a graha's rashi, bhava, and dignity.

The 108 padas also connect to the panchang (the five-limb daily almanac of Jyotish) through the Moon's daily nakshatra position, which practitioners track pada by pada across the lunar month. The Moon moves through roughly one nakshatra per day, and its pada position at any moment is part of the finer timing work that the panchang supports.

Padas are a layer of the chart that rewards attention without demanding it. A reading that does not reach them is not incomplete in a fundamental sense. A reading that does reach them often finds the detail that explains what the nakshatra level left open.
