What is Guna Milan?
A classical matching method that compares the Moon in two birth charts across eight categories, called kootas. Each carries a different weight, from one point for Varna up to eight for Nadi, and they sum to 36. It is the oldest and most widely used compatibility screening in Vedic astrology.
What is a good score?
Traditional practice treats 18 and above as worth looking at further, and below 18 as a reason to look more carefully rather than a refusal. We do not print a verdict, because Guna Milan reads the Moon alone. It cannot see Mangal Dosha, the seventh house or its lord, Venus, or the dasha periods either person is running, and those are what a real compatibility reading weighs.
What are Nadi Dosha and Bhakoot Dosha?
A shared Nadi scores zero out of eight, and certain Moon sign distances score zero out of seven for Bhakoot. Both are treated seriously in classical practice, and both have widely accepted cancellations, called parihara, which depend on the rest of the two charts. A zero here is a reason to have the charts read properly, not a conclusion.
Why do the two people give different scores if I swap them?
Two of the eight kootas are directional: Varna and Vashya. Varna carries a rule about the groom relative to the bride, and the Vashya grid is read one way round, so swapping the two people can change the total. This is a property of the classical method, not a rounding difference. Tara looks like a third, because it is counted from one nakshatra to the other, but it is counted in both directions and the two halves are added, so its total comes out the same either way.
Why does this need both birth times?
Every koota derives from the position of the Moon in each chart. The Moon moves about one degree every two hours and crosses a nakshatra boundary roughly every day, so a wrong birth time can move someone into a neighbouring nakshatra and change several kootas at once.
