What is a Janam Kundli?
It is the Vedic birth chart: a map of where the nine grahas stood at the moment and place you were born. "Janam" means birth and "kundli" means chart. It is the same thing this page calls a birth chart, and everything else in Vedic astrology is read from it.
Do I need my exact birth time?
For the Lagna, yes. The ascendant moves through a full sign roughly every two hours, so an hour of error can change it — and the ascendant sets which sign sits on which house. The Moon and the other grahas are far less sensitive. If you do not know your time, the placements are still meaningful; the house positions are the part to hold loosely.
What are the D1, D9 and the other divisional charts?
Divisional charts, or vargas, subdivide each sign to look at one area of life more closely. D1 is the birth chart itself. D9, the Navamsa, is the one most often read alongside it and is traditionally consulted for marriage and for the deeper strength of a placement. The others cover wealth, siblings, children, career, parents and difficulty. They are read as refinements of the D1, never on their own.
Which ayanamsa do you use?
Lahiri, also called Chitrapaksha — the Indian government standard used in the Rashtriya Panchang. Other ayanamsas differ by around a degree, which is enough to move a placement near a sign boundary, so a chart from a calculator using a different one may disagree with this by a sign. The ayanamsa is stated on every result here so the two can be compared.
Why does this chart differ from a Western one?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the fixed stars. The two have drifted roughly 24 degrees apart, so most people find their Sun sign moves back by about one sign. Neither is a mistake; they are measuring from different starting points.
Is anything stored?
Not unless you ask. The chart is computed and returned, and nothing is written down. If you choose to save it to an account, the birth details are kept so the chart is there when you open the app.
